According to a scientific report citing studies from 2009 and 2019, avocado oil’s high monounsaturated fat content and neutral flavor have propelled its industry growth, prompting many grocery stores to carry both name brand and private label versions. However, private label oils, produced by a third-party processor and sold under a grocery store’s brand, may be at a higher risk for adulteration or fraud due to the number of stages and parties involved in their production, refinement, and bottling.
These oils need third-party testing and professional buyers should know how to identify authentic avocado oil. Even though product quality and traceability are crucial for private label buyers when choosing suppliers, price is often the decisive factor. Authentic avocado oil is costlier to produce than soybean oil or a mixture of avocado and high oleic sunflower oil, allowing fraudulent suppliers to undercut genuine avocado oil providers, while still reaping higher profits.
